After breakfast you will be transferred 5 km to Machame Gate (1850) where your hike starts after a brief introduction to your crew. The days hike takes 7 hours (15km) and leads through the natural rain forest and giant heather between River Weru and Makoa to the Machame Hut at 3000m.
Todays hike takes (5-6 hrs) 8km and leads down a gorge where you cross several dry river beds before ascending a cliff.Here you can view the Shira Plateau,the oldest of Kilimanjaros 3 Calderas and enjoy a well deserved lunch break. After the rest you move on towards Shira Hut, which is at 3800m.
After breakfast at 7:00am you leave Shira hut for a long hike (7-8 hours) to Karanga Valley on the southern circuit. The path takes you through sparse vegetation to the start of the Alpine desert. You then branch to Barranco Hut leaving the Lava Tower Rock on your left. Dinner and overnight will be at a camp at the Barranco Hut.
You leave the last Water point, the Karanga River behind and move on with the days hike which takes you to Barafu Hut (4600m). After a 2hr gentle walk through Moorland and dry heather, you will bypass a steep rocky trail,3hrs on, you will arrive at Barafu from where you will have a magnificent view of Kibo, Mawenzi and the plains below.
After a short night and a hot drink, the final ascend of Kibo starts between midnight and 1.00 am. This section gets gradually steeper as you zigzag for 5-6 hours on the frozen screed or snow fields depending on the season before you reach the Stella point (5700m)at sunrise. From here on the crater rim you can watch sunrise and the magnificent ice fields. After a short break you then proceed along the crater rim to the Uhuru peak (5895m)reaching there at about 8.30am.After your summit photo, and meeting the technical climbers coming from the west you descend to Barafu Hut for lunch before proceeding to Mweka Hut (3100m).The night again will be spent in a flycamp.
The final 4 hour descend after a superb achievement takes you through a rain forest to Mweka gate (1400m) Here you will be awarded your well deserved certificates of achievement before proceeding to your local accommodations for a hot shower, dinner and a good night rest.
